Quick answer: Starbucks Rewards in the U.S. has three membership levels in 2026: Green, Gold and Reserve. Green members earn 1 Star per $1, Gold members earn 1.2 Stars per $1, and Reserve members earn 1.7 Stars per $1 on qualifying purchases at participating stores. You can redeem Stars for drink customizations, discounts, brewed drinks, bakery items, handcrafted beverages, breakfast, lunch, protein boxes and selected merchandise. If you want to compare what those rewards can buy, start with our Starbucks Menu Guide.
Updated October 14, 2026. Starbucks launched its reimagined Rewards program on March 10, 2026. The rules below are based on the current U.S. Starbucks Rewards Terms and official Rewards pages. Store participation, promotions and personalized offers can vary.
Starbucks Rewards 2026 at a Glance
The 2026 program is easier to understand if you separate status from spending Stars. Your level is based on how many qualifying Stars you earn over a 12-month period. Your redeemable Star balance is what you spend on rewards. Redeeming a free drink does not erase the historical level progress that qualified you for your current status.
| Level | How to qualify | Base earn rate | Birthday window | Star expiration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green | Automatic when you join | 1 Star / $1 | Birthday only | Generally 6 months unless extended by qualifying activity |
| Gold | Earn 500 Stars within 12 months | 1.2 Stars / $1 | 7 days from birthday | No expiration while Gold status is maintained |
| Reserve | Earn 2,500 new Stars during the 12 months after reaching Gold | 1.7 Stars / $1 | 30 days from birthday | No expiration while Reserve status is maintained |
For most customers, Green is enough to benefit from occasional Stars, a birthday treat and member-only offers. Gold starts making more sense for frequent visitors because the earning rate increases and Stars stop expiring while status is maintained. Reserve is designed for very high-frequency customers and adds the fastest base earn rate plus premium recognition benefits.
How Green, Gold and Reserve Status Works
Green level
Everyone begins at Green. You earn 1 Star per $1 on qualifying purchases. If you do not reach 500 level-qualifying Stars within your 12-month qualification period, you remain Green and the level balance resets. Your redeemable Stars are separate from that level reset.
Gold level
You reach Gold after earning 500 qualifying Stars within 12 months. Gold members earn 1.2 Stars per $1. To keep Gold for the following year, you need to earn another 500 Stars during the next 12-month period. Gold also gives you a longer Birthday Reward window and additional Double Star Day opportunities.
Reserve level
After reaching Gold, you can qualify for Reserve by earning 2,500 new Stars during the following 12 months. Reserve members earn 1.7 Stars per $1, receive a 30-day Birthday Reward window, get more Double Star Day opportunities and may be eligible for a personalized Reserve Card and special experiences.
The thresholds sound large until you translate them into normal orders. A customer who buys coffee and breakfast several times a week will move much faster than someone who visits once or twice a month. If breakfast is a regular part of your routine, our Starbucks Breakfast Menu 2026 helps you compare current food choices before spending or redeeming Stars.
How Do You Earn Starbucks Stars in 2026?
You can earn Stars on qualifying purchases at participating Starbucks stores by paying with a registered Starbucks Card, using a linked payment method in the app, or scanning your member barcode before paying with cash, credit card, debit card or mobile wallet. Guest checkout does not earn Stars.
Your base earning rate depends on your current level:
- Green: 1 Star per $1
- Gold: 1.2 Stars per $1
- Reserve: 1.7 Stars per $1
Starbucks can also offer Bonus Stars through challenges, personalized promotions, partnership programs, Double or Triple Star Days and qualifying digital Starbucks Card reloads.
What usually does not earn Stars?
Common exclusions include Starbucks Card purchases or ordinary reloads unless a specific bonus applies, alcohol, some delivery orders, taxes, tips, donations, fees, purchases made as a guest and certain transactions at licensed stores. Participation can differ by location.
If you normally pay with a phone wallet, our Starbucks Apple Pay guide explains the payment side separately so you do not confuse an accepted payment method with automatic Rewards credit.
Do Starbucks Stars Expire in 2026?
Yes for Green members, but not in the same way for Gold and Reserve. Green-level Stars generally expire six months after the calendar month in which they were earned unless you complete qualifying activity that extends them. Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while you continue to maintain that status.
For Green members, Starbucks currently allows expiring Stars to be extended by one month if, during the month before the expiration date, you do at least one of the following:
- Make a qualifying purchase at a participating café.
- Redeem a Reward.
- Make a qualifying digital Starbucks Card reload of $30 or more.
The oldest Stars are used first when you redeem. That makes checking your app useful if you have a large balance and visit irregularly.
Starbucks Rewards Redemption Tiers in 2026
The U.S. program has six main redemption levels. The cash value is capped before tax, and some stores may not support every tier.
| Stars | Maximum value | What you can usually redeem |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Stars | $1 off | One eligible added espresso shot, syrup or sauce modifier |
| 60 Stars | $2 off | One qualifying item in your order |
| 100 Stars | Up to $6 | Brewed coffee or tea, bakery item, packaged snack or eligible logo plastic cup |
| 200 Stars | Up to $10 | Standard-size handcrafted beverage or hot breakfast item |
| 300 Stars | Up to $16 | Packaged salad/lunch sandwich, protein box or packaged coffee |
| 400 Stars | Up to $20 | Select merchandise or packaged Starbucks Reserve coffee |
If an eligible item costs more than the cap, current terms allow you to pay the difference plus tax. You also cannot stack multiple Star redemption tiers inside one beverage—for example, using one tier for the drink and another tier for its syrup.
For the 200-Star tier, handcrafted drinks include familiar choices such as lattes and Frappuccino blended beverages. If you want to understand cup sizing before using a reward, open our Starbucks Sizes Explained guide. Standard-menu-size rules matter on some reward types.
Which Starbucks Reward Gives the Best Value?
There is no single best tier for everyone. The useful question is: how much cash would this reward save on something you already buy?
A 100-Star bakery redemption can be excellent value if your usual pastry costs close to the $6 cap. A 200-Star handcrafted drink can make sense if your normal drink is expensive and still falls within the $10 limit. A 300-Star protein box or lunch item can work well for customers who use Starbucks as a meal stop rather than only a coffee shop.
If you care about calories and macros as well as reward value, check our Starbucks Calories & Nutrition Guide 2026 before choosing the most expensive item just because the reward can cover it. The best cash value is not always the best order for your actual goal.
For the 300-Star tier, current terms specifically include eligible protein boxes. Our Starbucks Protein Boxes guide gives food context before you spend that balance.
Starbucks Birthday Reward Rules in 2026
The Birthday Reward is one of the most valuable benefits because it does not require you to spend a specific number of Stars on the birthday itself. Eligible members can receive one qualifying handcrafted beverage, food item or ready-to-drink bottled beverage at participating stores.
To qualify, you generally need to:
- Join Starbucks Rewards at least 7 days before your birthday.
- Add your birthday to your account.
- Make at least one Star-earning transaction before your birthday each year.
The redemption window depends on status: Green members get the birthday itself, Gold members get 7 days beginning on the birthday, and Reserve members get 30 days beginning on the birthday.
Alcohol, multi-serve products, merchandise and packaged coffee are excluded. The offer is attached to your Rewards account, so the app is the best place to confirm eligibility before ordering. For a complete eligibility walkthrough, use our Starbucks Birthday Reward guide. If you specifically want drink ideas, the Starbucks Birthday Drinks guide is the better follow-up.
Free Mod Mondays, Reload Bonus Stars and Double Star Days
Free Mod Mondays
Members may receive one free eligible customization, up to $2 before tax, once per month on a Monday chosen by Starbucks. You need to select the coupon at checkout or tell the barista. The benefit generally cannot be combined with another Reward.
Digital reload Bonus Stars
Qualifying digital Starbucks Card reloads can earn Bonus Stars: a $30 reload earns 10 Bonus Stars, while a $50 reload earns 25 Bonus Stars. Reloading more than $50 in one qualifying transaction does not increase the bonus beyond 25 Stars under the current terms.
If you keep money on a Starbucks Card, our Starbucks Gift Card Balance guide explains balance management separately from Rewards.
Double and Triple Star Days
Starbucks can offer Double or Triple Star Days through the app or promotional email. Offers may need to be activated first. Gold members receive four additional Double Star Day opportunities per year, while Reserve members receive six additional opportunities under the current program.
Do You Earn More Stars With a Personal Cup?
Yes, Starbucks currently offers a double-Star benefit on qualifying transactions when an active Rewards member uses a clean personal cup at participating stores. The benefit applies to the qualifying transaction, subject to Starbucks’ current rules.
This can be one of the easiest ways for a regular customer to accelerate earning without buying extra items. It is far better to earn faster on a purchase you already planned than to spend more solely for points.
Do Starbucks Rewards Work at Every Starbucks?
No. Not every Starbucks location supports every way of earning or redeeming Stars. Licensed cafés inside airports, grocery stores, hotels, hospitals or other businesses may have different capabilities. Some locations may support only certain payment methods or only the 200-Star redemption tier.
When a Reward is the main reason for your visit, select the store in the Starbucks app before leaving. If you are planning around opening or closing time as well, our Starbucks Hours guide can help with the timing side.
The Smartest Starbucks Rewards Strategy
If you visit occasionally
Do not chase Gold status. Join for the birthday benefit, personalized offers and Stars from purchases you would make anyway. Watch expiration dates if you remain Green.
If you buy coffee several times a week
Gold can become realistic. Use personalized Bonus Star offers, personal-cup double Stars and Double Star Days when they line up with your normal routine. For the drinks themselves, browse the Starbucks Coffee Menu rather than letting a promotion choose your order for you.
If you buy expensive handcrafted drinks
The 200-Star tier can be especially useful. Compare the normal price of your drink with the $10 cap. If Frappuccino drinks are your usual order, the Starbucks Frappuccino Menu gives you a clearer idea of what that reward is offsetting.
If you use Starbucks for meals
Compare the 200-Star breakfast tier with the 300-Star packaged lunch/protein-box tier. The Starbucks Lunch Menu can help you decide whether saving another 100 Stars creates more real value for your normal order.
If free refills matter to you
Rewards membership has separate in-store refill rules that should not be confused with Star redemption. Read our Starbucks Free Refills Policy before assuming a refill uses Stars.
